Super Bowl LI Showed Us Why Video Marketing Works

Exactly 51 Super Bowls have passed, showcasing the best in American sports.  But what are the moments we all remember?  What do we talk about the next day at work?  What highlights are compiled into numerous (if not too many) “best of” lists and blogs?  That’s right.  Not the plays.  It’s the ads.  Video marketing remains one of the most effective marketing tools.

The Best Video Marketing Evokes Emotion

The above ad from Budweiser has already caused quite the stir from both sides of the political aisle.  Whether you are a Trump supporter who joined #BoycottBudweiser or a Liberal who felt the ad was in direct response to Trump’s executive order (production reportedly began last May), you felt something.  Brilliant video marketing evokes emotion and emotional responses are memorable.

What Makes Video Marketing So Effective

Why does it work?  Easy.  Video’s ability to show rather than tell.  While it’s cliche’ to say “a picture is worth a thousand words” with video marketing it’s true.  Let’s look at some examples.  What is more effective?

Option A:

“Follow your dreams!  You can be anything you want to be.  You just have to work hard.  If you work hard no one will be able to stop you from following your dreams.”

Option B:

Both options have the same message, but option B uses clever imagery and humor to deliver its message.  Oddly enough, option B is an ad for Honda.  Simply put, it’s a car commercial.

But Honda doesn’t tell you about the cool features the new CR-V has, or about its gas milage, or what it does for the consumer.  What it does is bring Honda to mind every time someone brings up “that cool yearbook commercial”.  That’s how great video marketing excels.  It matches emotion to memory and memory to product.

One of Video Marketing’s Most Powerful Weapon is Nostalgia

One of the more interesting ads was for Bai Antioxidant Infusion Drinks who combined the scene chewing acting of Christopher Walken with the catchy lyrics of ’90s boy band N’Sync.

Now when you hear the N’Sync’s famous “Bye Bye Bye” your memory will connect to this ad, effectively attaching your memory of that song to Bai’s product.  As a business that’s exactly what you want for your product.

Why Invest in Video Marketing

If you’re a merchant, business owner, or product developer by now you should understand why you must invest in video marketing.  Video has become the most powerful and effective tool in your marketing toolbox.  If you don’t use that tool, then you are doing yourself, your business, and your product a huge disservice.  Don’t believe me?  Take a look at the numbers from Super Bowl LI’s most discussed ads.

Super Bowls will come and go.  An while we may forget the winners and the losers, we’ll never forget the ads.
